The hygrometer at the top of the 6430
weather station indicates relative humidity from 10 to 100 percent. The
scale has numbers at 10 percent intervals and graphic markers at 2 percent
intervals. Also indicated are humidity ranges of very dry (10% to 37%),
normal (37+% to 69%), and humid (69+% and above).
The barometer below the hygrometer
indicates barometric pressure in kilopascals (kPa) on the outer scale and
in inches of mercury (inHg) on the inner scale. The kPa scale is numbered
from 96 to 106 and has graphic markers at 0.1 kPa intervals. The graphic
markers at the top of this scale actually go up to 107.1 kPa. The inHg
scale is numbered from 29 to 31 and has graphic markers at 0.1 inHg
intervals. The graphic markers on this scale range from 28.4 to 31.4 inHg.
On the 6430's barometer, three graphic
icons forecast the weather for 12 to 24 hours in the future based on
pressure changes. A rain icon at 29 inHg (98.2 kPa) predicts worsening
weather. A partly cloudy icon at 30 inHg (101.6 kPa) indicates that little
or no change is expected. A sun icon at 31 inHg (105 kPa) predicts
improving weather.
The thermometer at the bottom of the 6430
indicates temperature in degrees
Fahrenheit on the outer scale and degrees Celsius on the inner scale. The Fahrenheit scale ranges from
-30°F to +130°F. It has numbers at 10° intervals and graphic markers at
2° intervals. The Celsius scale ranges from -35°C to +55°C. It has
numbers at 10° intervals and also at -35°C and +55°C, and its graphic
markers are at 1° intervals.
You can easily calibrate the barometer on
the 6430 if you need to, and instructions and a small flat-blade
screwdriver for doing this are included. When you receive the 6430, you'll
want to listen to a local radio or television station and set your
barometer to the sea-level equivalent pressure for your location that's
normally given as part of the current weather conditions. Taylor
factory-calibrates the barometer to the sea-level equivalent pressure for
an altitude of about 600 feet. On the 6430 I'm looking at right now,
however, the pressure is lower than that. This means that the dial pointer
has moved during shipping, which can easily occur on a dial-type barometer
like this one. That's another reason for the manual calibration
capability.
Just so you know, the factory-calibrated
hygrometer and thermometer on the 6430 should not need manual calibration
and, in fact, cannot be calibrated with the supplied screwdriver.
On the back of the 6430 near the top is a
keyhole slot for mounting on a wall or other vertical surface. You'll need
to supply the screw or nail on which the 6430 will hang. Be sure to locate
it where it will not receive direct or reflected sunlight. Also, don't
hang it on a wall that's heated or in the path of heated air from a
register or other source.
