The TruTimer
5809 Two Event Big Digit Timer/Clock by Taylor is a medium-size digital timer
and clock with a large two-line display. In addition to
indicating the time in clock mode, the 5809 has two independent timers
that can count up to or down from 23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds. Use this timer in the kitchen,
lab, laundry, darkroom, or wherever to time single events or two
simultaneous events. With hour and minutes digits almost 1/2 inch tall and
seconds digits not much smaller, the 5809's display is easy to read.

The digital quartz clock in the 5809 dual
event timer displays
the time as hour, minutes, and seconds in the second (Timer 2) line
of the display. You can select 12-hour format with AM or PM, or 24-hour
format. To set the
clock, you simply move a two-position switch on the back of the timer to
CLOCK SET and then use the hour (H) and minute (M) buttons on the front to set the
time. After you set the hour and minutes, you can synchronize the clock by
pressing the seconds (S) button on the front to reset the seconds to zero.
After you
set the time, you return the switch on the back of the timer to
CLOCK/TIMER. Then, to switch between clock
and timer functionality in normal operation, you press the T1, T2, and CLOCK
buttons on the front of the unit as directed in the instructions.
When you press T1 or T2 to select a timer,
"one" or "two" appears in the display to indicate your
choice. To deselect a timer and return the Timer 2 display to the clock
display, press CLOCK.
To use Timer 1 or Timer 2 (or both) as a count-up (elapsed
time) timer, you clear the selected timer's display so that it reads
0:00:00 and then press the START/STOP button. The timer will count up to a maximum of
23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds in 1-second increments. After you stop the
count-up and reset to zero, the timer display blinks. To stop the
blinking, press CLOCK.
To use Timer 1 or Timer 2 (or both) as a countdown timer (for example, when
cooking), you select T1 or T2 and use the H, M, and S buttons to set hours, minutes,
and seconds. You then
press START/STOP, and the countdown begins in 1-second increments. You can temporarily stop and then restart the timer by pressing
the START/STOP button. When the countdown reaches zero, the timer beeps
and the timer begins to count up. At this time, press START/STOP once to stop the beeping
and a second time to pause the count-up. Then press RECALL/CLEAR once to
recall the last set time and a second time to reset to zero. Finally,
press CLOCK to stop the timer display from blinking and return to the
clock function.
While one or both timers are operating, you
can switch to clock mode temporarily to view the time without affecting
timer operation.
Here are a couple of things you might want to know:
Taylor describes this timer as water resistant, which is an uncommon
feature in this type of product. Just be sure not to pour water directly
on the 5809 or submerge it, and never put it in the dishwasher. Also, you may see this timer advertised as having a 1.2-inch LCD readout. This is the height of the LCD
panel itself, not the digits in it. As mentioned above, hour and minutes
are 7/16 inch and seconds are 5/16 inch.
On the back of the 5809
timer is a 3-way holder. When the holder is used as a spring clip, you can
attach the timer to, for example, a waistband or apron. You can
also flip out a metal bar to extend the clip, which lets you stand the
timer at an angle on a flat surface. On the back of the clip itself is a
magnet that can hold the timer to an iron or steel surface, such as a
range hood or refrigerator door.
The styling and neutral colors of
the TruTimer 5809 by Taylor will fit in with almost any
kitchen decor. This timer runs on one AAA (1.5V) battery, which is included
and preinstalled. All you need to do to power up the 5809 is remove the battery
compartment cover, remove the insulating strip that prevents battery drain
during shipping, and then replace the cover. The 5809 is covered by a
Taylor 1-year limited warranty.
