5525
Taylor Mason
Hygrometer |
|
|
The 5525 Taylor Mason
Hygrometer (A.K.A Mason's Hygrometer) is actually a wet and dry bulb Fahrenheit thermometer pair that
tells you the temperature and relative humidity in your home or virtually
any other indoor or sheltered location where the temperature remains above 32°F. The
humidity indication is based on the difference between the wet and dry
bulb temperatures. On the 5525 is a Relative Humidity Table that cross-references the
dry bulb temperature with the degree difference between the wet and dry
bulb thermometers to indicate the humidity. The Relative Humidity Table is
metal and pivots out from the left side of the 5525's base for access to
the glass reservoir that you fill with water before you use the
instrument. The 5525 mounts on a wall or other vertical surface by means
of a screw, nail, or hook. |

The
5525 Mason Hygrometer is really a pair of red spirit-filled Fahrenheit thermometers, one a dry
bulb and the other a wet bulb. The dry bulb thermometer indicates
the actual air temperature. At any dry bulb temperature, the wet
bulb thermometer reading can vary, depending on the humidity. High
humidity results in wet bulb readings close to dry bulb, while low
humidity (which speeds water evaporation and causes cooling) results
in wet bulb readings noticeably lower that dry bulb. A table on the
5525 indicates the relative humidity based on the degree difference
between the two temperature readings. | |
|
The 5525 is easy
to use and maintain. Here's all you need to do. Pivot the attached Relative Humidity Table
out for access to the glass reservoir. The glass reservoir has a
small hole near the bottom for filling and wick insertion. With the unit
horizontal, fill the
reservoir with water and, with the wick hole up, insert the reservoir into its
location between the thermometers. Then insert the wick, hang the unit, and
wait for the wet bulb temperature to stabilize. When it does, determine the
difference between the wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures (subtract wet
from dry), and cross-reference that difference with the dry
bulb temperature on the Relative Humidity Table. The cross-reference number is the
current relative humidity. (Be sure to refill the reservoir when it
becomes necessary.) If there's not much air movement, aiming a fan at the
wick can result in a more accurate humidity reading.
The two thermometers on the 5525 are physically identical and easy to read with
black numbers on a white background. The thermometer scales read from
10°F to 120°F and are actually graduated from 0°F to 130°F in
increments of 2°F. The body of the 5525 is dark gray plastic and is 4 inches
wide by 10 inches high.
The Taylor 5525 Mason's Hygrometer is environmentally safe because it is
spirit-filled and thus contains no
mercury. Like all thermometers, it is not to be mounted in direct
sunlight or where there is a great deal of reflected light.
