The Taylor
162 Jumbo Dial Thermometer with Clock (sometimes called the Taylor 162 Patio
Thermometer with Clock) is
a large analog dial-type thermometer and analog clock combination that's suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
On this instrument, the 18-inch thermometer dial diameter is the same as the
unit's
overall diameter. The styling of the Taylor 162 isn't fancy, but
with its jumbo dial and bold 1-1/8 inch numbers for degrees Fahrenheit, this
thermometer is definitely readable from a distance.

The thermometer in the Taylor 162 has both
Fahrenheit and Celsius scales. The Fahrenheit scale ranges from -40°F to
+120°F, and the Celsius scale ranges from -40°C to +50°C. Both scales
have numbers at 20° intervals and
graphic markers at 5° intervals. The numbers on the Fahrenheit scale
start at -40 and end at +120. Those on the Celsius scale start at -40 and
end at +40. The numbers on the Celsius scale are 7/16 inch tall.
The clock in the Taylor 162 has a 5-3/4
inch dial and 3/4 inch numbers at 3, 6, 9, and 12. This clock uses a highly accurate
analog quartz movement. You simply insert one AA (1.5V) battery into the
clock, turn a knob to set the time, and that's all there is to clock
setup. The battery is not included and must be obtained separately. We
recommend an alkaline battery unless the clock will be used outdoors where
temperatures can rise well above 100°F
or well below 32°F. Under these conditions, a lithium AA battery may work
significantly better. (Taylor
states on the box that very high temperatures may cause the clock to run
fast, and very low temperatures may cause the clock to run slow. Lithium
batteries have a much wider operating temperature range than alkaline and
may result in better clock performance in extreme temperatures.) Although
expected battery life is not specified, we believe from our experience
with this type of clock that the battery should last a year or more.
For mounting, the Taylor 162 requires two
nails or screws, which are not included and must be obtained separately.
The thermometer is easy to mount, and clear instructions for doing this are
provided on the package. If the 162 will be used outdoors, be sure to
tape the attached clear plastic cover over the clock movement as directed
in the clock instructions on the package. Although a specific tape type is
not specified, we figure that a durable, weather resistant tape (plastic,
for example, as opposed to cloth or paper) will be best for this purpose.
The Taylor 162 Jumbo Dial Thermometer with Clock is designed for easy reading in large rooms and workspaces. It can also be
used outdoors as, for example, a poolside,
patio, or garden thermometer-clock combo. Even though the Taylor 162 is weather resistant,
for correct temperature readings it should be mounted where it is
sheltered from direct or reflected sunlight and other heat sources. If
this is done, the thermometer will be accurate to +/-2°F.
Taylor has informed us that the 162 is water resistant, so
normal precipitation shouldn't affect it.
