The 47617 Westclox Big Ben 1949 Alarm Clock, in Cream
is an authentic reproduction of
the original Henry Dreyfuss design from 1949. Bring back the comfort of a bygone
era with a clock that you may remember from your parents' or
grandparents' house. Every detail
from the satin cream case color to the brass plated bezel and vintage
dial design is faithfully reproduced to maintain the Big Ben
tradition of unique styling and quality. Only the modern convenience of
a quartz analog movement and a pleasant "beep" alarm sound
separate this Big Ben replica from the original 1949 model. This clock is super-simple to use and requires one AA battery. The clock fits perfectly on
a nightstand, table, or shelf, or even on the floor next to your bed.

The 47617 1949 Alarm Clock remains true
to its handsome original design with a satin cream metal case and a
brass plated metal bezel. The dial is white in the center
shading to a slightly yellowish off-white at the outer edge. Unlike some Big Bens, this one has a three-hand
display. The hands are dark brown, and the hour and minute hands
have luminous greenish-white centers for viewing in the dark. This clock has a
4-inch dial with 3/8-inch tall dark brown hour numbers for
easy reading. A round window above the center of the dial shows the
selected alarm time. Designed for placement on a nightstand,
table, desktop, or on the floor next to your bed, this alarm clock works
in the home or wherever ac powering is not readily
available. |

The Big Ben 1949 clock is really easy to
use. You set the time and the alarm time by means of rotating knobs on the back of the clock.
The movement in the 47617 is a conventional analog quartz movement. Thus, this clock is not "atomic" and does not adjust automatically for Daylight Saving Time, but it is extremely accurate.
To set the alarm time, you
turn the alarm knob until the desired time appears in the ALARM window
above the dial center. To turn the alarm on, you pull the
alarm knob outward. When the alarm time is reached, a crescendo beep
pattern sounds, at which time you can press and release
the alarm button again to return it to the down position and silence the
alarm. If not silenced earlier, the beeping continues for 4 to 5 minutes
and then resume after another minute, in which case it beeps several
times, stops for 20 to 30 seconds, beeps again several times, and
continues this pattern for another 2 minutes. As long as the alarm knob
remains pulled out, the
alarm will sound again in 12 hours at the set time.
For powering, the
1949 Big Ben clock requires one AA (1.5V) battery, which is not included. We recommend an alkaline battery because alkaline cells are far less prone to leakage than the carbon-zinc type, and their leakage is far less corrosive. Expected battery life is about 1 year. The
1949 Big Ben is intended for placement on a flat surface such as a
nightstand, dresser, or shelf, or on the floor next to your bed or couch. It cannot be wall-mounted.
With its easy setup and operation, the
47617
Big Ben is an alarm clock that almost anyone can use and appreciate.
This clock is a perfect (and affordable) gift for almost anyone who
likes the post-WWII 1940s to early '50s retro look. There are even a
photo and some text from
a 1949 magazine ad on the back of the box. With absolutely authentic original styling and a
modern
quartz movement, the Big Ben 1949 is a quality alarm clock that's also a
half-century trip back in time.
