The ultra-slim (7
mm thin!), near credit-card size RM928NA atomic alarm clock is perfect for
travel. It comes with its own black leatherette travel pouch that
doubles as a table stand and even has a slot for credit cards.
Most of the clock is silver in color, while the base is a
contrasting titanium gray. The teardrop-shaped LCD panel displays
the time (or month and date) in digits over 1/2 inch tall. Indoor
temperature and seconds (or weekday) are just over 1/4 inch tall.
All digits, characters, and icons are displayed in dark blue, and
the LCD panel has a blue electro-luminescent backlight with two
intensity levels for night viewing.

| When you're
traveling, you'll really appreciate the compact size and useful features of this radio-controlled digital clock with calendar and
dual snooze alarms. The clock automatically sets time and date by synchronizing to the radio signal
(WWVB, 60kHz) from the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado. Daylight Saving Time
changes are automatic. Radio reception can
be disabled if you want to set the clock manually (for example, if you
take it out of WWVB signal range). For the time format, select either
12-hour format with AM or PM or 24-hour format. For the temperature unit,
select °C or °F. For the calendar format, select date-month or
month-date.
During normal operation,
you can use the MODE rocker switch on the top of the clock to toggle
between three display modes:
- Time with seconds, plus
indoor temperature.
- Time with weekday, plus
indoor temperature.
- Month and date (in
either order), plus indoor temperature.
The time (or month and
date) digits are bold and just over 1/2 inch tall. Temperature and seconds
(or weekday) are smaller at just over 1/4 inch. You can select any of 5 languages for the
2-letter weekday abbreviation: English, German, French, Spanish, or Italian.
The month and date are also displayed digitally, while the weekday is displayed as a 2-letter abbreviation. You can select any of 5 languages for the weekday abbreviation: English, German, French, Spanish, or Italian. For normal display, toggle between displaying seconds, or weekday and current time, or month and date simply by pressing the mode button.
Above the time display are
a U.S. map icon that shows the selected time zone (Pacific, Mountain,
Central, or Eastern and a radio-reception signal strength icon (waves in a
circle) for the WWVB time signal.
The clock's two alarms are daily alarms.
Each sounds with a 2-minute crescendo pattern and has an available 8-minute snooze
function that is activated by pressing the SNOOZE/LIGHT button on the top of the clock
when an alarm sounds. Bell icons indicating 1 or 2 appear below the
current time when the alarms are set (on).
The clock also has an
available hourly chime feature. When the hourly chime is on, the clock
beeps at the beginning of each hour. A clock face icon to the right of the
radio signal strength icon appears when the hourly chime is selected.
A feature of this clock
that's really useful is the electro-luminescent blue backlight for the LCD
panel. Pressing the SNOOZE/LIGHT button when the alarm is not set (off), or when the alarm is set but has not yet sounded, lights the
backlight for 8 seconds. On this clock, you can select either a Hi or Lo
backlight intensity level. To conserve the battery, select Lo when there
is some ambient light available. Select Hi at night when a brighter backlight is necessary.
If the backlight does not operate, this tells you that battery replacement
is needed.
Another cool feature of the
RM928NA is Key Lock. You can press the ZONE/LOCK button on the top of the
clock to lock all the other buttons and switches so that accidentally
pressing them does not cause your configured settings to change. Pressing
the button a second time unlocks the other controls.
On the back of the clock is a RESET button that is used during battery
replacement to restore the default display so that you can perform clock setup again. This button can also be used if the clock malfunctions--for example, if the display becomes incorrect from exposure to a strong electrostatic field and needs to be reset.
The Oregon Scientific RM928NA digital
travel alarm clock is silver in color with silver control buttons on the front and
top and a darker titanium-gray base. The teardrop-shaped LCD panel with
blue background and the similarly shaped accent around the Alarm button
are nice styling touches that add visual interest.
Included with the RM928NA
are two CR2032 (3V) lithium button cell batteries.
The clock requires only one, so you install one and keep the other as a
spare. Also included is a black leatherette travel/storage pouch that can
be fashioned into a table stand (the instruction manual shows you how to
do this).
Compact size, lots of features, and an affordable
price make the Oregon Scientific RM928NA digital
travel alarm clock both a practical accessory and a real value.
