The TX6130 wireless
thermometer and indoor hygrometer monitors and displays the indoor temperature,
the indoor relative humidity, and, as
reported by the included wireless remote sensor/transmitter, the outdoor
temperature from a location up to 100 feet away.
A red front-panel LED on the remote lights when
the unit is transmitting, and a "waves" icon on the main unit
flashes when it is searching for the signal from the remote. If
the signal from the remote is lost, you can use a pushbutton on
the back of the main unit to initiate a search. On the main unit, temperatures can be
displayed in °F or °C, as selected by a front-panel
pushbutton, and indoor relative humidity is displayed in percent
(% RH).
The indoor temperature measuring
range of the TX6130 is 32°F to 122°F (0° to 50°C). The outdoor temperature measuring range is
14°F to 122°F (-10°C to 50°C). The indoor
relative humidity measuring range is 20% to 90%, and the
hygrometer performs best between 40% and 70% RH.
The TX6130's
integral memory records maximum and minimum values for
indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, and indoor humidity. These are
available at the push of a button, and you can simply push
another button to clear and reset the memory whenever desired.
You can set a freeze
alert on the TX6130 that warns you when the temperature falls
into the freezing zone of 37.4°F to 30.2°F (+3°C to -1°C).
This is done by means of a slide switch on the right side of the
main unit. Setting the switch to FREEZE ALERT provides both an
audible 5-second beep each minute and a flashing FREEZE icon in
the display when freezing is imminent. Setting the switch to
SILENT provides only the flashing FREEZE icon. If you don't want
a freeze alert, just set the switch to ALERT OFF. The
TX6130's clock can display the
time in 12-hour format with PM or in 24-hour format. To
set the clock time, alarm time, and time format and to turn the
alarm on, you use the SET/ALM STOP button and the + and -
buttons. After setup, you can switch between indoor
humidity and clock time in the center window simply by pressing the
SET/ALM STOP button. The alarm in the
TX6130's clock is a single daily alarm
with an available 5-minute snooze function. A bell icon in the
humidity/time display indicates that the alarm is on. When the alarm
sounds, you can stop the beeping for 5 minutes by pressing the
SNOOZE/LIGHT button, or you can turn the alarm off until the
next day by pressing the SET/ALM STOP button. If you want to
turn the alarm off permanently, you must return to the alarm set
mode. Pressing the SNOOZE/LIGHT button at any time lights the
blue LCD panel backlight for 5 seconds. The backlight source
appears to be an LED, but since this is not specified, we cannot
be sure.
For powering, the
TX6130 main unit and its temperature remote each require three AAA (1.5V)
batteries, for a total of six (not five as indicated on the back
of the package). The
batteries are not included, and we recommend alkaline batteries
for both units unless the remote will be used in sub-freezing
temperatures, in which case lithium AAA batteries should be used
in the remote instead. When the displays become faint and
difficult to read or the remote stops transmitting, battery replacement is needed.
Expected battery life for both units is about 12 months.
Here are a few
things you should
be aware of. With the TX6130, you insert batteries in the main
station first and then the remote. Also, the TX6130's remote
sensor does
not have a temperature display of its own. Finally, be sure
mount the remote in a location where it is not exposed to direct
sunlight and is protected from rain, snow, and wind.
Both the TX6130 main
unit and its temperature remote have an integral fold-out stand
for free-standing use and a keyhole slot for wall mounting.
If you need an inexpensive digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with
an indoor (ambient) hygrometer and an alarm clock, and you'd
prefer one that looks just a little different from most, the TX6130
by Timex may be just the ticket. While its styling is hardly
radical, this is the first thermo-hygrometer we've seen in white
and with circular displays accented in orange. The displays are
large for easy reading, and you don't have to push a button to switch
between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Also, the freeze alert
and the min/max temperature and humidity memory are useful
features. The TX6130 is ideal for home or office use and fits
almost anywhere. It comes with a 1-year manufacturer's limited warranty.
