The Maverick RF-02 Cold- Chek^® Digital Refrigerator/Freezer Thermometer instantly shows you the exact temperatures of your refrigerator and freezer when you open the fridge door. It also computes and displays rolling seven-day averages for both fridge and freezer temperatures. You can set weekly average temperature maximums for both the fridge and freezer, and the RF-02 will tell you if the actual fridge and freezer averages have remained within +/-3°F of the set maximums or if the averages have been outside the +/-3°F range. This compact digital instrument helps you to prevent spoilage and monitor appliance temperature fluctuations to preserve food, medications, scientific samples, wines, and other beverages. It's ideal for many applications where refrigeration temperature is critical.

The instant and average fridge and freezer temperatures are displayed in digits 1/4 inch tall. You can select °F or °C for the display by holding the MODE button depressed for 3 seconds. An integral light sensor turns the green or red LEDs off when the refrigerator door is closed to conserve the batteries. A low battery icon in the display tells you when battery replacement is necessary.

Here's something you should know. The RF-02 adheres to an interior wall of a refrigerator by means of adhesive tape on an angled mounting bracket on the left side of the unit's case. The instructions tell you to remove the bracket from the unit to mount it, but they don't tell you how. We found the bracket difficult to remove, so we left it on. If you pry or force the bracket, you'll risk breaking it and rendering the unit unmountable. The RF-02 is so small that mounting it with the bracket in place is not a problem.

Here's another thing: The RF-02 has an internal temperature sensor for the fridge and, as mentioned above, a probe on a wire for the freezer. The instructions state that there are two mounting clips with adhesive tape to help position the wire and probe. In reality, there is only one mounting clip, at least on two different units we checked.

The average freezer set range of the RF-02 is -22°F to +32°F (-30°C to 0°C). For a safe freezer temperature that is neither too high nor too low, the USDA recommends 0°F (-18°C). The average refrigerator set range is +23°F to +50°F (-5°C to 15°C). For a safe fridge temperature, the USDA recommends +37°F to +40°F (3°C to 4°C).

The Cold-Chek RF-02 is powered by two AAA (1.5V) carbon-zinc extra heavy duty batteries, which are included. Expected battery life is about 6 months, assuming that the refrigerator door is opened 20 times per day for 7 seconds each time. The ET-73 is covered by a manufacturer's 90-day limited warranty.
