SKYWATCH Xplorer 4 Handheld Weather Station with Wind Speed and
Direction (Anemometer), Electronic Compass, Temperature,
Wind Chill Factor, Altimeter, Barometer, and Pressure History |
|
| Designed in Switzerland by JDC Instruments,
the SKYWATCH® Xplorer 4 Handheld Weather Station is a great companion for
skiers, sailors, windsurfers,
glider pilots, and adventurers of all sorts. The Xplorer3 and Xplorer4,
with their propeller type wind sensor and built in electronic compasses,
are uniquely capable of accurately measuring wind speed and
direction.

The Skywatch
Xplorer 4 displays wind speed and direction
(instantaneous and peak), temperature, wind chill
factor, altitude, barometric pressure, and altitude or
barometric pressure history. This precision
instrument is weather proof, small and light enough to
go almost anywhere, and comes with a removable lanyard so you can wear it around
your neck.
The first section of the LCD panel
on the Xplorer 4 shows instantaneous (current) wind
speed. The second, smaller section of the display, can
display the maximum recorded wind speed since the last
memory reset, the compass direction (giving wind speed
and direction simultaneously), current temperature, wind chill
factor, altitude, barometric pressure, or altitude or
barometric pressure history.
Atmospheric pressure on
the pressure sensor is recorded once each hour for the
past 48 hours. These readings represent changes in
weather and changes in altitude, depending upon change
in location. This information can be interpreted
as altitude history or change in barometric pressure on
an hour by hour basis.

You can select kilometers per hour (km/h),
knots, feet per second (fps), miles per hour (mph), or
meters per second (m/s) for the units in your wind speed
readouts. Compass direction is in degrees. Temperature and wind chill factor can be
displayed in °F or °C, altitude in feet or meters,
barometric pressure in hPa or inHg, either absolute or
relative. An electro-luminiscent (EL) backlight lets you
view the display in dim light.
The Xplorer 4 has a
1-minute auto-off feature but can also be turned off
manually. Also, the auto-off feature can be disabled for
what the manual calls "permanent" operation
(we'd call it constant-on) until you re-enable auto-off.
The Xplorer 4 is not only compact and
lightweight but also sturdy and weatherproof. It can even stand short-term
immersion in water at a depth of up to 1 meter (39
inches), allowing you to take water temperature measurements. This instrument has a molded case and a
stainless steel back.
When you use your SKYWATCH Xplorer
4 Wind Speed Meter,
remember to point it directly into the wind. A variation of +/- 15° can affect
its accuracy. At this point, reading the compass will give you the direction of
the wind. Also, please note that this anemometer is sensitive to magnetic
fields and may thus display numeric
values when in a magnetic field (from a computer, electric appliance, etc.).
However, this will not affect operation under normal circumstances.
The owner's manual
supplied with the Xplorer 4 covers
all four Xplorer models. Instructions are
provided in eight languages: French, English, Spanish,
Portuguese, Italian, German, Dutch, and Polish.
