PCR102W Atomic Projection Alarm Clock
|
|
|
Now here's a
different-looking clock! The Digiview PCR102W Atomic Projection Alarm Clock
is shaped like a sphere on a tapered, circular neck that serves as its
base. The clock's overall look reminds us of an old-time diving helmet,
but in place of the lens on the front, the clock has a backlit time and
calendar display. The clock also projects the time in red on a wall or
ceiling from the larger of the two "bumps" on its top. The clock's
dual daily
crescendo alarms each have an available 5-minute snooze function. This
clock is designed for placement on a nightstand, dresser, shelf, or similar location.

Not only does the Digiview
PRC102W project the time in red on the ceiling or wall, it also has a backlit
three-line LCD panel that shows the current time,
month, date, weekday, and either the alarm 1 or alarm 2 time. The display is about
1-1/2 inches wide by 1-1/4 inch high. The hour and minute digits are
1/2 inch
tall. Seconds and calendar information are smaller, and seconds
are actually displayed vertically (for example, 45 is shown as a
4 above a 5). An LCD panel backlight with auto-off provides readability in dimly lit conditions.
Both daily crescendo alarms have a 5-minute snooze
function. With clever and lighthearted styling that both kids and
grownups will appreciate, the PRC102W is translucent dark
sea-blue in color wit light blue trim, pushbuttons, and
switches. The trim ring around the clock base is soft,
rubber-like material that won't slide around easily and also
won't damage the surface on which the clock rests. |

You'll appreciate the absolute accuracy and the convenient features of the
Digiview PRC102W Atomic Projection Alarm Clock.
The PRC102W calibrates itself to the world's most accurate clock every night by receiving WWVB 60kHz radio transmissions. These transmissions contain time information from the U.S. atomic clock source operated by the U.S. Commerce Department near Boulder, Colorado.
On the PRC102W, the time is displayed in 12-hour format with AM or PM.
Month and date are displayed digitally in that order, and the weekday is displayed as a
2-letter abbreviation in your choice of English, Spanish, or French. If you set the clock manually, you'll need to set the time, year, month, and date. The weekday abbreviation updates automatically as the date is set.
Successful reception of the time-synchronization radio signal and signal quality are indicated by a radio
tower and waves icon in the top right corner of the display. After synchronization occurs, you can select your continental U.S. time zone
(Pacific, Mountain, Central or Eastern) by means of
pushbuttons on the front of the clock. The pushbuttons are actually the
ends of the X-shaped light blue accent on the "neck" below the
display. A U.S. map icon just below the reception icon indicates the selected zone. This clock automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time (DST). If you live in an area that does not observe DST (Arizona and parts of Indiana), you'll need to manually change the time zone twice a year to display the proper
time in the spring and fall. Simply changing the time zone (as opposed to manually resetting the time) does not affect WWVB time-signal synchronization.
Two display modes are
available on the PRC102W: clock time with alarm 1 time and clock time
with alarm 2 time. Pressing the MODE button toggles between the two modes.
You set the alarms by means of the MODE button and the alarm 1, alarm 2,
+, and - buttons that are the ends of the decorative X on the clock's front.
The PCR102W's projection unit
projects upward from the front of the clock at an angle. Where you place
the clock will determine whether the projected time is displayed on the
wall or the ceiling. A button on the bottom of the clock lets you flip
the projected image 180°. With battery powering, or when the clock is powered from the included ac
adapter and the continuous projection switch is set to off, the time is projected for
5 seconds when the SNOOZE-LIGHT bar is pressed. With ac adapter
powering and the projection switch set to on, time projection is
continuous. The projection range of the PCR102W is not specified, but we tested it and we'd say it's easily
7 to 8 feet, and maybe more. The projected time digits vary in size, depending
on how far the unit is from the wall or ceiling. From our testing, we
think that the projected image at normal distances is large enough for
folks with normal vision to read easily.
The Digiview PRC102W has dual daily alarms with programmable snooze. When
an alarm is set to
on, a numbered alarm bell icon appears just to the right of the alarm
time. The
alarm on this clock sounds with a 4-minute crescendo pattern. When this
happens,
you can press the alarm 1 or alarm 2 button to silence the alarm, in
which case you'll have to turn the alarm on the next night, or you can press the
SNOOZE-LIGHT bar on top of the clock to silence the alarm
for a user-programmable snooze interval of 1 to 59 minutes, after which the alarm sounds again for 4
minutes. Pressing the SNOOZE-LIGHT bar at any time lights the soft green
LCD panel backlight. To maximize battery life, the backlight has a
5-second auto-off function.
The PCR102W atomic projection
clock can be powered by two AA batteries or the included
ac adapter. With adapter powering, we suggest that you turn off
continuous projection during the day to maximize the life of the
projection unit.
You'll find that the Digiview PCR102W Atomic Projection Alarm Clock is easy to set up and use.
And the best thing is that you won't have to grope around for a light switch or lamp knob in the dark to view the time. We think that you'll
enjoy the cleverly designed and inexpensive PCR102W
projection clock, and we believe your family members and friends will, too. This quality clock makes a thoughtful and practical gift that
won't put a big dent in your wallet.

Note:
The PCR102W is an "atomic" clock. Atomic (or radio controlled) clocks
receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver,
however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a
building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other
electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather
is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during
the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks
are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle
of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for
days until they can catch another signal. When you first put batteries
in the clock, it will most likely not set itself until the middle of the
night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be
correct. Under less than ideal conditions, signal reception and
calibration can take a few days. Also, Daylight Saving Time changes may
not be made the first night if the location and weather are not
favorable.
