The movement in the 15397 is a conventional analog quartz movement, using one "AA" (1.5V) battery, which is not included.  Expected battery life is about 1 year. 

To turn the alarm on, you slide the alarm switch upward. When the alarm time is reached the bells sound by means of a metal mallet striking them, this continues until the alarm switch is slid downward, to silence the alarm. As long as the alarm switch is in the upward position, the alarm will sound again in twelve hours at the set-point. There is no snooze feature on this model.
