The
AW129 is really easy to use. First, plug the probe wire into the
thermometer sensor and power it up. Then power up the monitor. On
the monitor, select your
entrée: Beef, Lamb, Veal,
Hamburger, Pork, Turkey, Chicken,
or Fish. Then select the desired level of doneness: Rare, Medium
Rare, Medium, or Well Done. Place the thermometer sensor on a cool surface outside of the
grill, insert the tip of the probe into the center of the meat, and
begin cooking. Clip the monitor to your belt, or take it with you
and place it nearby when you're away from the grill. As the meat
cooks, both the target temperature and the current temperature of
the meat are displayed on the monitor.
When the meat is
within 5 degrees of the target temperature, you hear 4 beeps from
the monitor. When the meat reaches the target temperature, you hear
a continuous beep. If the meat starts to overcook, you hear a
continuous fast beep.
Switches in the monitor's
battery compartment let you select °F or
°C for the display and Hi or Lo volume for the beeper.
The Reset buttons in the battery compartments of the monitor and the
thermometer sensor are used to synchronize signal transmission between the
two units. Both Reset buttons must be pressed within 60 seconds of
power-up of the units, as the instructions indicate. We should
mention a few more things here. A red LED in the middle of the thermometer
sensor flashes to tell you that it is on and transmitting, and an antenna
icon on the monitor displays a wave to indicate that it is receiving. The
monitor unit comes with a belt clip that, when installed at an angle, doubles as a table stand.
Finally,
if you select chicken, turkey, pork, fish, or hamburger as the entrée,
the doneness level defaults to Well Done for safety reasons (to kill any
nasty bacteria). We presume that if you like your grilled tuna steaks less
than well done, you'll have to experiment a bit.
The monitor
uses two AA batteries, and the thermometer sensor uses two AAA batteries.
All batteries are included and preinstalled. All you need to do to get
going is remove the plastic insulating strips from the batteries, press
the Power buttons on the two units to power them up, and press
the Reset buttons of both units within 60 seconds.
Note:
The operating temperature range of the probe is 32 °F to 572 °F.
Grease flare-ups can exceed the temperature range of the probe wire, as
can grill temperatures of some grills. Please take care to route the
probe wire where flare-ups are unlikely, and keep the grill temperature
below 572 °F
