The ET-8 Maverick
Redi-Chek Roast Alert/3
Electronic Timer/Thermometer, is great for ovens, fryers,
barbecues, smokers and lets you cook accurately and safely every time. The Redi-Chek Roast Alert/3 has three distinct alerting
signals that tell you when food is almost done, done, and then overdone.
This instrument comes with a stainless steel probe on a detachable, heat-resistant
wire for inserting into the meat or poultry. You can select
factory-programmed doneness settings for meats and poultry, and you can
also create your own programs with custom temperature settings. The ET-8 has a 20-hour countdown/count
up timer, memory recall, and quick start/quick stop timer button.

What could be easier? Set
the Redi-Chek ET-8's POWER switch to ON and the switch on the back for a temperature
display in your choice of °F or °C. Insert the thermometer's probe into the meat or poultry. Push a button to select the type of meat
or poultry you're cooking. Sixteen different meat and poultry choices
are available. Push another button to select the desired TASTE setting: RARE, MEDIUM RARE, MEDIUM, or WELL for beef, lamb, or veal, or DONE for the other meats and poultry. Then
set the ALERT switch to ON. For example, if you are cooking veal and desire
medium (160°F) doneness, here's what happens after you place the meat in a preheated
oven:
-
When COOK TEMP reaches 140°F, the RARE icon
flashes.
-
When COOK TEMP reaches 145°F (Medium
Rare range), the Pre-Alert alarm beeps (long beep), the PRE-ALERT icon
flashes, the RARE icon stops flashing, and the MED. RARE icon flashes.
-
When COOK TEMP reaches 160°F (start of
Medium range), the Alert alarm beeps (short beep), the ALERT icon
flashes, the MED. RARE icon stops flashing, and the MED. icon flashes.
-
If the meat is not removed from the heat, then as the COOK TEMP reaches 170°F (start of
Well range), the Overcook alarm beeps (continuous beep), OVERCOOKED
and ALERT icons flash, the MED. icon stops flashing, and the WELL icon flashes.
Also, the Overcook timer starts to count up so you know how long the food has been overcooking. The START/STOP button can be pressed to stop the beeping sound.
As one of its 16 selectable meat and
poultry types, the ET-8 has a PGM (program) setting that lets you set
your own temperatures for the doneness values. Also, you can change the
factory-set, USDA-recommended doneness value temperatures for any of the
selectable meat types. For example, let's say you're cooking veal and
you'd like a slightly higher or lower temperature for the Medium
doneness value than the preset 160°F. You select VEAL by pressing the
MEAT button and MED by pressing the taste button. You then use the MEMORY, +, and -
buttons to change the temperature in 1° increments and store the new
temperature in memory until you want to change it again.
The timer in the Redi-Chek ET-8 is a 20-hour
countdown/count up timer. To count up, you simply press the START/STOP button on
the top of the unit. To count down, you press HR to set hours, MIN to set minutes,
and SEC to set seconds. You then press the START/STOP button to start
the countdown. When time reaches 0:00:00, the alert alarm beeps and the
TIME'S UP icon flashes.
The easy-to-read three-line LCD panel is 1-3/4 inch
high by 1-5/8 inches wide. The top line of the display shows the meat type and the
OVERCOOKED icon (if appropriate). The second line shows the Alert (alarm) temperature and the probe sensor
(cooking) temperature. The third line shows the timer time. The
selectable doneness levels are displayed vertically to the right of the
meat type and temperatures.
The Redi-Chek ET-8 offers three convenient mounting options. It can be hung on a
wall via the keyhole slot in the mounting bracket on back of the unit.
It can be mounted upright by removing the bracket (which doubles as a
table stand) and attaching it to the bottom of the unit. Also. it can
adhere to an iron or steel surface by means of its double magnets
(accessible by removing the bracket from the back).
The cooking thermometer requires one AAA (1.5V) battery (included) and has a POWER ON/OFF switch to maximize battery life. Please be aware that this thermometer's probe is designed for use in conventional ovens, barbeque grills, deep fryers, and smokers up to 410°F
(temperatures above that will deteriorate the wire). Do not use the base
unit inside an oven, and never use the ET-8 in a microwave oven. The
AAA battery included with the ET-8 is a carbon-zinc heavy duty battery,
but when replacement becomes necessary, we recommend and alkaline
battery. The
ET-8 is covered by a
manufacturer's 90-day limited warranty.
Please Note: The ET-8 should never be submerged or soaked in
water and should be kept away from direct heat and precipitation. To prevent cross-contamination, it's a good idea to wash the stainless steel probe sensor
after each insertion, but do not immerse the probe in water. Always use heat-resistant gloves when handling the probe sensor or wire during or just after cooking. Do not touch
the probe or wire with bare hands.
