Alert Public Alert Radio
with Calendar Clock
|

The WX-167 First Alert Public Alert Radio with Calendar Clock
receives audio and
digitally encoded NOAA civil and weather emergency
radio broadcasts. The WX-167 also has an
integral digital quartz clock with calendar. The NOAA text messages and warnings can be displayed in English or Spanish in the
radio's LCD panel. When not displaying a message or warning, the LCD
panel shows the time, weekday, month, date, and year.

| The WX-167 is
slightly off-white in color with glossy black accent panels
around the LCD panel and control pushbuttons. On the left side
is a volume knob, and on the right side is a function (scroll)
knob used for programming and tuning. The radio is about 8 by
5 inches in size. It can be placed on a horizontal surface or,
with the included mounting bracket attached, hung on a wall. The
WX-167 receives NOAA messages and warnings and uses S.A.M.E.
technology to identify specific areas.
You'll appreciate not only the the WX-167's weather alerts but
also its digital quartz clock
with calendar.

NOAA stands for National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. The WX-167 receives audio and digitally encoded civil
and weather emergency alert messages transmitted from NOAA Weather Radio
(NWR) broadcast towers. There are currently more than 900 towers in the
50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin
Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories. The WX-167 receives all seven
NOAA weather channels, and it uses Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.)
technology to identify specific areas such as a county or a portion of a
state.
Here's how the WX-167 works. Upon
reception, the WX-167 displays NOAA text messages in its LCD panel in
user-selectable English or Spanish. The alert siren sounds at one of two user-selectable volume
levels, and the radio automatically switches to
the voice broadcast. Message types are identified by three color-coded
LEDs located above the display. A yellow LED lights for advisories, an
orange LED lights for watches, and a red LED lights for warnings.
External accessories for the handicapped can be connected to the WX-167,
and these are also triggered when a message is received.
The WX-167 stores up to 10 currently
active alert messages in its memory. Alerts are automatically removed
when the time for the event expires. You can select and replay any
stored alerts.
To simplify programming, the WX-167 has
an integral database of more than 3000 state and county locations. You
can select up to 20 of these to which your radio will respond. Please be
aware that you must select the correct weather channel to receive NOAA
messages for the state and county locations that you program. Additional
programming options let you
select any of four alerting options and also let you block specific
unwanted alerts, such as weekly tests.
The clock in the WX-167 is a digital
quartz calendar clock that displays hour, minutes, day, month, date, and
year.
You'll be glad to know that the WX-167 is
easy to program thanks to its Function (scroll) knob and informative
menu displays in the LCD panel. The menu language is user-selectable for
English or Spanish. Also, the User's Manual is well written
and easy to read and understand and even includes an alert description table plus tips and troubleshooting information.
Actually, two User's Manuals are included, one in English and one in
Spanish. You also get Quick Start Guides in both English and Spanish.
The WX-167 can rest on a horizontal
surface, or you can attach the included mounting bracket and hang it on
a wall. When you use the radio on a horizontal surface, you can tilt the
LCD panel upward for an optimum viewing angle.
In your home, the WX-167 operates on 9Vac
power supplied by an included adapter plugged into a standard 120Vac
wall outlet. The radio also uses five AA batteries for backup power in
case of an ac power failure. The batteries can be non-rechargeable
alkaline, or they can be rechargeable nickel-cadmium (NiCad) or Nickel
Metal Hydride (NiMH). Do not mix battery types. Also, you must be
absolutely sure to set the slide switch in the battery compartment for
the battery type that you use. The settings are Alkaline and NiCad, and
you
use the NiCad setting for either NiCad or NiMH. The reason for the
battery-type selection switch is that an integral charger in the WX-167 keeps
NiCad or NiMH batteries charged up, but the charger cannot operate with
alkaline batteries. Also, using the NiCad setting with alkaline
batteries may cause leakage and present a fire hazard. The manual
explains all of this in detail.
You can use the WX-167 in your car,
truck, van, or SUV, but you must purchase the 12Vdc car adapter
separately. You plug one end of the adapter cord into the 9VAC -or-
12VDC jack on the back of the radio (the same jack is used for both
ac and car adapters) and the other end into the vehicle's cigarette
lighter or accessory outlet.
This product is backed by a
manufacturer's 90-day limited warranty.

Features:
- NOAA alert function: Radio
automatically sounds an alerting siren tone and flashes
the appropriate LED color when a weather or civil
emergency broadcast is received from NOAA (Weather Band).
- Specific Area Message
Encoding (S.A.M.E.): This allows you to store up to 20
different location codes in memory. Each code identifies a
specific area, such as a county, defined by NOAA.
Setting the S.A.M.E. location helps reduce unnecessary
alerts.
- Alphanumeric display:
LCD panel displays NOAA weather band, AM and FM
frequencies, time, programming information, and
alert/status descriptions. When radio is powered by the ac
adapter or a 12Vdc source, the display is continuously
backlit.
- Nonvolatile memory:
Radio programming data is stored in nonvolatile memory
that will not lose settings even when both ac and battery
power are lost.
- Remote alert jack (3.5
mm): Provides a contact closure to activate
special-need external accessory devices such as strobe
lights, pillow vibrators, and remote sirens for the
handicapped (handicapped accessories are not included).
- Alert audio out jack (6.2
mm, mono): Allows connection of the siren and audio signals
to a public address system with amplifier and unamplified
external speaker. The Volume knob controls the audio
output level, and the radio speaker is disabled when this
feature is active. (Note: The back of the radio's package
says that this is a 7.6 mm jack and that the
- External antenna (F
connector): Allows you to connect an optional external
antenna (not included) for weather band only to improve
reception in fringe or low-reception areas such as a
shelter.
- Rear panel power jack:
Connects to included 9Vac wall adapter or 12Vdc car
accessory adapter (not included).
- Battery backup: Radio
will operate on five AA non-rechargeable alkaline or
rechargeable NiCad or NiMH batteries. Alkaline batteries
provide up to 24 hours of operation, while NiCad or NiMH
batteries provide 8 to 15 hours.
