Meat Thermometer, By Chaney
Instrument
|
|
|
The
03162 Meat Thermometer, By Chaney
Instrument is a professional-grade instrument
with tough stainless
steel construction and a non-skid, non-roll red silicone shell that's easy to
grip and can withstand heat up to 500°F. Designed specifically for
cooking meat and poultry, the 03162 has both English and metric temperature
scales. The English scale reads from 120°F to 218°F, and the metric
scale reads from 48°C to 100°C. The 03162 is suitable for use in
barbeque grills as well as
conventional ovens. Unlike some cooking thermometers, this one is
dishwasher-safe.

The 03162 Meat Thermometer has a 4-1/2 inch stainless steel probe and a
stainless steel case with a red silicone shell for easy
handling. The black dial is 1-3/4 inches in diameter
and protected by a glass lens. (The package says 2" Dial,
but that's a slight exaggeration.) The numbers and
markings on the dial are white (except for Boil Test and
recommended meat temperatures; see below), and the pointer is red. This
thermometer indicates temperatures in both °F and °C. |
|
|
|
To the right of the
temperature scales, the 03162's dial indicates, boldly
and in red, four USDA recommended minimum internal
temperatures for a variety of meats at specific doneness levels. These
are precooked ham (140°F), ham/beef/veal-medium/ground beef (160°F), beef/pork/veal-well
done (170°F), and poultry (180°F). On the back of the 03162's
package, along with the instructions, are more USDA recommended
internal meat temperatures. You'll want to
keep this list on hand for quick reference.
A really cool feature on the
03162's dial is a Boil Test marker at 212°F/100°C. This
helps to ensure that meats cook to the proper doneness level. Somehow,
the Boil Test instructions were omitted from the back of the package, so
we'll provide them here. To use this feature, immerse the probe in 2-1/2 inches
of boiling water. If the pointer registers at Boil Test, you're fine. If
you are significantly above sea level and the pointer is lower, subtract
that number of degrees from the target temperature of the meat you're
cooking. If you are below sea level and the pointer is higher, simply
add that number of degrees.
Attesting to
this thermometer's quality is the fact that it's NSF®
Certified. NSF International is an
independent, non-profit company dedicated to public health and safety
and a leader in standards development and certification. The Chaney
Instrument 03162 is covered by a
manufacturer's 1-year limited warranty.
