A part of Chaney Instrument's Barbecue Essentials line, the Acu-Rite 00708 Poultry Thermometer, by Chaney Instrument is optimized both size-wise and by its dial indications for cooking poultry. The Chaney catalog actually calls this product a Poultry Button. The 00708 is designed for use in conventional ovens and in barbecue grills. This is a thermometer that you leave in the bird while cooking and check periodically for the desired doneness.

The Acu-Rite 00708 lets you safely check the internal temperature of poultry as it cooks. The only dial indication on the 00708 is 180°F DONE. This is the USDA recommended internal temperature for whole chicken, turkey, duck, and goose and the thighs and wings of each. To prevent food-borne illness, it is important that these types of poultry be cooked to 180°F. (For roasts, breasts, and ground poultry, 170°F is the USDA recommended internal temperature.) If you roast or grill poultry, you'll find the 00708 to be an extremely versatile little cooking accessory. On the back of the 00708's package is a chart that indicates the USDA recommended internal temperatures for a wide variety of poultry and meats. You'll want to keep this chart handy for quick reference when you're roasting or grilling.

Because the stem (probe) of the 00708 is only 1-1/2 inches long, this thermometer may not be suitable for use in the largest turkeys (like the 30-pounder a guy I know cooked on his big gas grill) and in some poultry loaves. For these, use a cooking thermometer with a longer probe that will reach the center of the meat.

Since the 00708 is so inexpensive, you'll want to order one for each piece of poultry you'll be grilling. This way, you can cook to perfection for each of your family members and guests.

Please Note: This thermometer should never be used in microwave ovens. Also, the 00708 should never be submerged or soaked and is not dishwasher-safe. To clean it, you simply wash the probe in hot, soapy water. To prevent cross-contamination, it's a good idea to wash the probe after each insertion.
