What
could be easier? Insert the thermometer's probe
into your food. Set the temperature to which your food is to be
cooked. The USDA-recommended internal temperatures for cooked
meats and poultry are indicated right on the back of the unit. Then set the
ALARM ON/OFF switch to ON to turn the alarm on. When
the alarm sounds, your food will be cooked to the internal
temperature you set. In
addition to its temperature alarm, this thermometer also features
a clock with an available countdown timer mode. The clock can be
optioned to display the time in 12-hour or 24-hour mode, and the 24-hour
countdown timer (hh:mm) has its own alarm. You can
use this instead of the temperature alarm, or you can use both
alarms simultaneously, which can serve as a double-check in some
cooking situations. For
example, let's say you have a beef rib roast that you wish to
cook medium rare. Your cookbook says to roast it a specific
number of minutes per pound at a specified temperature.
Naturally, you calculate the expected length of cooking time
based on the roast's weight. Then, using the Acu-Rite 00648
thermometer/timer, you set its countdown timer for that length
of time. In addition, you set the temperature alarm for 145°F
(63°C), which is the USDA-recommended internal temperature for
medium rare beef. Theoretically, the two alarms should sound
almost simultaneously. But this is real life, and, careful cook
that you are, you check the roast when the first alarm sounds.
It's the temperature sensor, but the countdown timer still has a
few minutes to go. You remove the roast from the oven, knowing
its internal temperature is correct for medium rare and that it
won't be overcooked by remaining in the oven too long. The
00648 cooking thermometer has a wide temperature measurement
range of +14° to +392°F (-10° to +200°C). During setup, you
can option the 00648 to display the temperature of your cooking food and
the set (target) temperature in °F or °C (default is °F). The 00648 features
a heat-resistant stainless steel probe on a 3-foot high-temperature
(700°F/371°C) stainless steel wire. Please be aware
that this thermometer's probe and wire are designed for use in conventional ovens, barbeque
grills, deep fryers, and smokers--but NOT in
microwave ovens. And although the probe and wire can
tolerate high temperatures, don't let them come into direct contact with
flames because possible damage can occur. The
00648 is hinged in the middle, so you can pivot the upper section with the
LCD panel to a convenient viewing angle when you use this thermometer on a
shelf or countertop. The
large 3-line display shows, from top to bottom, the
temperature of your cooking food (COOK), the setting at which the
temperature alarm will sound if on (SET), and either the countdown timer
(TIMER) or the actual time (CLOCK) setting. This
version of the 00648 has a black plastic case with
silver-tone buttons. The
thermometer requires 2 AAA (1.5V) batteries (not included) and has a
POWER ON/OFF switch to maximize battery life.
