The AcuRite 00613 Digital Hygrometer and Thermometer is a specialized device.  It is designed to primarily monitor indoor relative humidity, although it does monitor temperature as well. The largest portion of the display of the 00613 is dedicated to the indoor relative humidity reading, and an indoor comfort level display that indicates whether the relative humidity is high, OK, or low.  The AcuRite 00613 can be used in the home, or in business, food service or manufacturing environments where humidity extremes can be a problem.

Why should you be concerned with indoor humidity?  First, because humidity can affect health.  High humidity can cause growth of mold and mildew.  Low humidity can contribute to sinus discomfort and infections, dry eyes and skin. In the winter, maintaining humidity can make your home feel comfortable at a few degrees lower temperature, which can reduce heating bills.  In the summer, keeping the humidity down reduces the need for air conditioning to maintain comfort.

Humidity levels are critical for other things as well.  Low humidity can be damaging to wood furniture and musical instruments, causing wood to shrink and sometimes split, and causing furniture to come apart at the joints.  In an office environment, low humidity levels can cause static electricity problems that can result in copy machine and printer paper feed problems, and equipment damaging static discharges.  High humidity can cause decomposition of artwork, books, documents, and photographs, as well as problems with paints or inks drying.  If you are keeping fine cigars in your home, you know that controlling humidity is a must.

At the top of the display is a display of indoor relative humidity in big, bold 3/4 inch digits. To the right of that is a comfort level icon that shows the relative humidity as either high, low, or OK.  The second line of the display simultaneously shows the daily high and low humidity in 1/4 inch digits. The third line displays current temperature in your choice of °F or °C in digits a bit under 1/2 inch.  At the bottom of the display, daily high and low temperature are displayed, also in 1/4 inch digits.
